How this calculator works
Jars are sold by volume, but wax and fragrance oil are measured by weight. The calculator bridges the two in three steps.
- Water weight. Water is the reference: 1 ml of water weighs 1 g, and 1 fluid ounce weighs about 1.04 oz.
- Pour weight. Melted wax is lighter than water, so the jar holds less wax by weight. Pour weight = water weight × wax factor (0.86 by default).
- Wax and oil split. The pour weight is split into wax and fragrance oil, so the candle still reaches your fill line once the oil is stirred in.
Wax = pour weight ÷ (1 + fragrance load)
Fragrance oil = wax × fragrance load
With the default 7.5 oz of water, soy wax and an 8% load: 7.5 × 0.86 = 6.45 oz total pour, made of 5.97 oz wax and 0.48 oz fragrance oil.
The figures are starting points. Burn-test every new wax, wick and fragrance combination before you sell or gift a candle. For more detail, read how much wax a candle jar needs and how much fragrance oil to add.
